#3. Aristotle’s Poetics
The Origins of Literary Criticism
90 Second Summary
Talk + Music + Dialogue
Talk
A 30 minute introduction to the Odyssey by Oliver Trace
Aristotle’s Poetics is the first book to analyse what makes a good story. It is the foundation of an area of academia known as Literary Criticism. It is hard to find a book written today about storytelling, art, poetry or literature that does not make reference to this seminal text. In it, Aristotle looks at several of the leading poets of his day, most notably Sophocles, and draws general insights from their specific works of art that still ring true today.
