A letter to Thomas

There is a delicate balance between ideology as a sense of purpose and ideology as a source of terror. In January 2021, we worked with CDS and Prevent, a government organisation that aims to reduce the number of people who become terrorists. We animated a letter that Michael Evans has written to his brother Thomas who died in 2015 as a British al-Shabab jihadist fighting in Kenya.

The visual language is built around the idea of being contained within a house and coming into contact with obstacles at home.

This masterclass in visual storytelling left us searching for superlatives. The deep blue colour Amy has chosen as her base highlights the gravity of the story, as well as the isolation felt by both Thomas and Michael as their friendship is put into jeopardy. A brother to brother relationship is one of the most rewarding, yet it is also one of the most challenging. Amy has captured the delicate balance between love and resentment, acceptance and remorse, support and competition. All within the confines of the home.

Identities can be concealed when sensitivity is required. And it is at home with younger audiences.
